France - Friday, June 26

An email to my mother...

I'm glad I got to talk to you today! It was worth it getting the phone...it's been nice to hear familiar voices every couple days and I feel more accessible in case there were some sort of emergency. I forgot to comment on Michael Jackson while we were on the phone....so weird! 50 is so young...I'll be interested to see what the autopsy uncovers, if anything. ok, on to the daily update...much of this you already heard on the phone, but i always reply to your emails first so it ends up being a template for the ones I send to everyone else, so I have to put it all in. And this way you've got it all on record!

Even though I fell asleep at the grand hour of 9 pm last night (Good thing I've heard Paris nightlife is not amazing, bc I can't stay awake long enough to experience any of it), I forced myself to sleep in until 8 this morning.  i turned on cnn to have in the background as i got ready (my new hotel has 2 english channels..cnn and bbc, i usually switch back and forth to whichever is least boring at the moment, and i must say, i've started to miss watching csi in french like i did at the old hotel). I did a double take back to the tv when i thought i heard the crazy news that michael jackson had died...and it was true. so weird!!! all day long today i'd walk by stores that were playing old MJ hits, especially thriller. apparently the french will miss him a lot, and per the BBC, so shall the chinese and japanese. so after watching the news for awhile i finally got out and headed to the metro.

i stopped along the way of course for a morning pastry, pain au chocolat. delicoius, as per usual. my original plan was to visit the arc de triomhe and then walk along champs de elysees, then come to the louvre and do the lourvre tour. on the metro, i completely forgot about my plans and just got off at the louvre and went straight to the museum. it reminded me of disneyland for the following reasons 1. endless crowds going in all directions 2. asian tourists taking pictures of absolutely everything and 3. way way too many children. i forced my way through the crowds to see all the main sites and then went over to the less crowded wing with ancient artifacts from iran, iraq, mesopotamia, egypt, etc. that was enjoyable of course because of the artwork, but also because of the lack of crowds and the perfectly temperature controlled air conditioned rooms. as i was leaving the louvre i suddenly remembered that i'd skipped the entire morning portion of my plan. i decided that i liked it as a morning plan, and pushed it back to when i return from nice and cannes.

last night as i was leaving the internet cafe, a sudden downpour came on and i was literally drenched on my way back to the hotel. the forecast had said rain, and it was raining when i woke up this morning, so i dressed for it. but by this point the sun had come out and my jeans and sweater were too hot so i went back to the hotel to change. while there, i remembered that my procrastinator self had kept putting on buying train tickets, and i still had none, although i'm leaving tomorrow for nice. so i went into a slight panic, consulted my trust rick steeves paris guide book's train section and found a list of offices that sell train tickets throughout the city. lucky for me, there was one just around the corner from my hotel. so i headed over, and got my tickets to nice, to cannes, and then back to paris. the rest of my trip has been pretty organized, but that was cutting it kind of close for my liking...oops.

feeling less panicked, i got back on the metro and headed to avenue victor hugo, which had a number of patisseries and chocolatiers on my list to hit up and let me tell you, it is a glorious avenue. for starters, there was an aerosoles store right there with a big soldes (sale) sign in the window!! i switched over to my tennis shoes the other day for comfort's sake, but here was my chance to get a less ugly and cute outfit-clashing comfortable shoe! I found a pair for 49 euros and put them on right outside the store. voila! i was a whole new woman! back on track i came across a chocolatier that also had ice cream. i got a chocolate orange entremets (personal sized dessert....often with layers of cake and mousse, in this case layers of ice cream) and it was a-mazing, the best thing i've eaten so far!! the top  was a thin layer orange gelee with tiny pieces of candied orange peel. then, there was a layer of white chocolate orange ice cream, that tasted a lot like a sorbet. then a layer of chocolate ice cream with small pieces of malted chocolate. anyone who has had thrifty ice cream's chocolate malted crunch flavor...this was like a high class version of that. then on the very bottom were crumbled pieces of a chocolate crust. just writing about it i want to eat it again!!! i also got 2 surprise chocolates....one a success: dark chocolate with a soft dark center and one a non-success: a milk chocolate ball filled with hazelnut chocolate cream.

i realized it was getting late so i hopped back on the metro to make it to the pere lachaise cemetary before it closed at 6. I hadn't originally planned to visit the cemetary b/c i get easily creeped out and didn't want to have nightmares, but sean (who studies abroad in paris) insisted that it was his favorite spot and would not be creepy. he was right! the cemetary is beautiful, filled with trees and pathways for you to wander and admire the elaborate gravestones. some of these things are really huge, and not like any gravestones i'd seen before. i stopped by the famous graves: oscar wilde, edith piaf, jim morrisson, chopin, and a few others. then wandered a little on my own, but the cemetary was closing so i had to cut it short.

so now onto nice...i don't have a set out plan for my few days in the south, i'm mostly just hoping for lots of sun. tomorrow will be a train filled day, but i arrive in the afternoon, so hopefully i'll have something interesting to report on!

Love,

P

An email to my friends...

Bonjour!

I went to bed last night planning to have a more "relaxed" day today since this power tourism is absoultely exhausting, but per usual, i was awake at the crack of 6:30 and then out the door at 8. i had to check out of my hotel and into the new one over by the eiffel tower (which required 3 metro trains). i always pack with the mindset that i have to carry my own luggage wherever i go, so it wasn't overly heavy, but while walking with it up and down the stairs in the metro stations i couldn't help but remember how anytime i was carrying luggage in a tube station in london, some guy would just grab it from me, carry it up the stairs, and then take off without even letting me say thank you...not the same in france, i did all my own carrying.

after dropping my luggage at the new hotel, i went over to Rue Cler, a cute little street of markets nearby in the 7th arrondissement. I absolutely love it!! It has little fruit shops, cheese shops, butchers, wine shops, patisseries, ice cream shops, chocolatiers...any specialty you can imagine. i made a mental note to come back for lunch and then i headed over to the rodin museum. all this time alone in museums has given me some time to contemplate what kind of art i like and dont like. fortunately, my toru book has descriptions that are simple and short enough to keep me interested, but do actually lead to me learning something. so i like sculptures, i like impressionism, i love degas, i love van gogh....and as i have always known, i dont so much care for picasso. the rodin museum is small, but nice. it has a collections of sculptures inside a mansion where rodin used to live, and a few outside in the garden area.

since the rodin museum was small, it only took about an hour (about 10:30 am) so I decided to stop into the army museum on my way back over to rue cler before lunctime. i saw napoleon's tomb right at the entrance of the museum, then got completely lost looking for the WW1 and WW2 exhibits, wandered through some galleries of armor, lost interest, and left. luckily that all took nearly an hour, and then the wrong turn i took on the way took up some more time putting me at around noon, and ready for some lunch preparations.

I went back to Rue Cler and purchased a salmon and spinach quiche from the boulangerie/patisserie, a frasier (strawberry cake), a pastry called dicorce (which was 2 pastries molded together...once chocolate and one coffee), 2 tiny apricots, and bunch of bright red cherries from the fruit market. I planned to go to the orangerie museum after lunch, so i decided to picnic in the tuileries garden right outside. i ended up walking all the way to the end of the garden near the louvre b/c that is the only spot where there is grass you can sit on. i like to lounge during my picnics, not sit upright on a bench. and these french certainly do love their gravel...every park is filled with it. It reminds me too much of a dessert, I want less gravelly walkway and more green.

when i finally reached the grass, i sprawled out with my picnic (and took photos before diving in dont worry). i was pretty darn full about midway through but still managed to eat every bite. then i laid there for awhile, then when the giant group of students on a field trip came to settle in for their lunch picnic, i decided to depart. the orangerie is also a very small museum, but worth seeing. monet's water lilies were painted just for this space...2 giant oval rooms with the paintings extending around, and per my guide book, one of the first occurrances of a space being designed to house specific art to enhance the experience.

after the museum, i kind of didn't know what to do with myself so i sat on a bench to contemplate. i was right by the louvre, but i'm planning to do that tomorrow morning when i'm full of energy and not totally tired. my other options were all things i had planned around other activities too, so i continued to sit there then finally decided to go find this gelato place i had read about. i couldn't find it, despite walking past the alleged address like 4 times...i guess it moved, but i did find a couple other chocolate/candy shops...one that has been open since the 1700s! I got some flavored marshmallows (rose, pear, lemon, violet, raspberry and a mystery blue one that i can't figure out) and some flavored caramels (mint, cafe, chocolate, raspberry, and original....all were delicious). i also found this patisserie that also sold savory foods that looked like pastries!! they had this really cool cup of guacamole, crab, then another layer on top that looked like 3 layers of mousse, and another really cool looking salmon thing that i can't even explain. too bad i was still full from my feast.

i'd had enough wandering so i hopped back on the metro and came back to the new hotel. i offically checked in and saw my room...i have my own bathroom here with a super nice shower/bathtub. i wish i'd known earlier, i would have gotten some bubble bath! my room has a mini fridge with 3 euro sodas, but i'm going to get some food from the supemarket around the corner for dinner tonight and tomorrow.

that's all i have for now on this "relaxing" day of tourism. it's been nonstop sunny but started drizzling a little on my way to find the cyber cafe so hopefully the rain won't last.

Oh and I did get an email from the metro guy about going to some music festival tomorrow night...I'm undecided so I haven't replied yet. we'll see.

xoxo,
P

An email to my mother....

Happy Birthday Mom!!!!!

I am actually amazed at how much ive been doing each day, getting up early really helps but i am certainly exhausted at the end of the day. and about shoes, i have comfortable shoes for everyday wear but not for the type of walking ive been doing, my feet are killing me and ill be giving myself a nice long foot massage tonight. my legs arez also sore from all the random stair walking. maybe i wont end up gaining any weight from all the food im eating!!

i enjoyed verseilles...it was huge!!!!! definitely worth seeing but not my favorite thing so far. i breezed through the chateau stopping in each room to take a look around and read what it was all about, then moving right along. i spent the most time in the gardens, which i thought were fantastic to look at but not so great to stroll through with all the gravel. granted they are huge and take awhile to walk through but i was amazed how many tourists just stopped on the perimeters and took pics but didnt walk through. also, tourists are the rude ones in france, not the french...they dont say thank you, dont say excuse me, are loud and obnoxious, dont hold doors, walk in front of photos, push and shove.....and many of them seriously smell!!!!!

since im such an early riser these days, i was out the door at 7:30 and at verseilles when it opened at 9, then i was leaving a little after 12 when most of the crowds started arriving. i was happy to be back in paris...my home base (i wish it was really my home!!). i had expected the trip to last later into the day so i had some time in the afternoon to do as i pleased. i decided to go to the orsay museum since i was too tired to go yesterday, but first i had to eat lunch. after wandering for awhile i stopped at a small cafe and got a salad. during my wandering i stumbled across a chocolatier id been planning to visit called patrick roger (sidenote, the chocolates i got yesterday ended up being a dissapointment...i didnt like how the flavors meshed together and 2 of the ones i picked ending up having hazelnuts, which i hate...so i needed to redeem with some good chocolate). i went inside and went into immediate sticker shock...this choco was pricey!!!! they had these really cool looking green round chocolates that i tried asking about but the girl only spoke french...a box of like 9 was 44 eruos! yikes!! i ended up getting a small bag of chocolate covered orange peels (for the bargaing price of 13.50) and ate most of them on my way to find lunch. they were worth it though, soooo good!

after lunch on my way to the museum i stopped in a patisserie id seen earlier. i got a passion fruit entremet (a small dessert made of laers of cake and mousse) but it ended up being a disappointment. the mousse was good but the cake was really dry. i guess not everything in paris can be wonderful! so then i finally made it to the orsay...this museum is mostly known for its impressionist collection, which i quite enjoy.

at this point it was a little after 4 and jenny was planning to call me at 5 so i had some time to kill. i decided to take the metro over to the eiffel tower and lounge in the park nearby til 5, then go up in the tower after our call (another sidenote...i wanted to do 2 visits to the tower: one by day and then one by night to see the fantastic light show and the view of paris after dark, but it doesnt even start getting dark here til after 11!!!!! i dont stay up that late so im not sure im going to see this nighttime view). so i hop on the metro and this guy gets on at the stop after me and asks me a question in french so i tell him i dont speak french, so he asks another guy his question then sits down and starts chatting me up in english about his recent visit to the US and how he like paris better (i tried to expain that yes paris is infinitely more amazing but there are more exciting places in the US than detroit). so then we got off at the same stop and he offered me to come meet up with him and his friends tomorrow night so i gave him my email to contact me since i dont know my phone number. well see if he emails and if i check it in time...i wouldnt say im lonely but i think it could be fun to hang out with some parsians for an evening!

so i make my way over to the tour de eiffel and await jennys call while lying in the grass. we chatted for a bit and then i mustered up the strenght to make my way to the top. the tower has 3 levels at 200 ft, 400 ft and 900 ft. you can climb stairs to the fisrt 2, then have to take an elevator to the top (good thing bc my feet were killing me and im so nuts i probably would have tried to climb the whole way if it were an option). the first 2 levels were fun....the ride to the 3rd was frightening, but it wasnt so bad once i was up there. the ride back down was equally frightening and i was glad to be on solid ground.

i walked across the river from the tower to see it from the trocadero, which is supposed to be the best viewing spot. the trocadero it pretty freaking amazing itself. a huge fountain surrounded by people lounging the way lounging should be done...shoes off, feet in fountain, leaning back looking over at the eiffel tower. if that isnt the life i dont know what is!

at this point my poor feet had had enough so i hopped back onto the metro to my little hotel in monmarte. im finding it less charming now that the internet has been down for 2 days. luckily, the internet cafe is literally next door, though its generally filled with qbout 65 percent creepy people at any given time.

ok time for a much needed shower...im contributing to the smelly tourist problem i complained about earlier. goodbye for now!!!!

An email to my mother....

hi mom!!

the internet in my hotel is down, so im at an internet cafe...the hotel has american keyboards, the cafe does not, so dont mind the typos.

i fell asleep at the grand hour of 6 pm last night i was so exhuasted. then i slept 13 hours and got up at 7 this morning feeling a lot better. i went on a historic paris walk from my book this morning. well actually first i went all the way to this specific place i wanted to try for breakfast with some amazing sounding chocolate raspberry pastry but they were closed for the week due to some sort of emergency (or so i gathered from the sign taped in the window). so instead i wandered to another patisserie and got a pain de chocolat...delicious but i wanted more chocolat in it.

then i started my tour at notre dame, lucky for me im an early riser on european time so i beat most the crowds. it the church is stunning and reminded me a lot of st pauls cathedral in london. i then saw the left bank and walked all over the 6th arrondonissment? which is amazingly adorable. i kept taking detours to check out patisseries i saw/not following the tour directions correctly and getting lost/not knowing how to read a map properly. lucky for me, not understqnding the directions let me straight to the jardin de luxembourg which is now without a doubt my favorite place in the world. it seems straight out of a novel...the best park ever to sit and read a book or have a picnic. i loved the pond in the middle with all these little sailboats that children push away with sticks when they come to the edges, complete with one pirate ship. i almost wanted to cry when i left i loved it so much.

i got back on track with my tour and ended up at st chepeille, a tiny church with wall to wall, almost floor to ceiling stain glass windows. then i saw the palais de justice (supreme court) and the consigier (cant remember spelling right now, but i know thats way off), the prison where people were kept before going to the guillotine, including marie antoinette.

i then walked along the seine and saw some cute neighborhood parks and the oldest bridge in paris. i also saw the oldest tree, planted in 1602. the walk was over and i was hungry so i set off to find poilane, one of the most famous breadmakers in paris. it took me twice as long as planned due to my map reading skills and then when i finally found it the girls working there were totally rude!!!! so far everyone has been super polite to me and most enjoy my pathetic attempts to order in french but no one here even offered to help. its a tiny shop and 3 girls were just standing around. they helped everyone else who came in, so i just left and decided not to give them my business. on my way to find something else for lunch i stumbled across a chocolate shop with amazing chocolates and got a box of  4, i havent eaten them yet so will report on that later. i also came across laduree, the creator of the french macaron!!!!! i got a rose, a caramel, and a mint. they were perfection...by far the best macarons ive ever had.

i had afternoon plans to go to the orsay museum so i decided to get something nearby and picnic in tuilleries, a park in front of the louvre. i grabbed a sandwich (which i now realize is the only non pastry thing ive eaten in almost 48 hours) and laid down on the grass. once i sat down there was no getting up, i was sooo tired from walking all day, so orsay plans were postponed. when i was finally ready to get up i went over to ile st louis (a posh residential island with lots of eateries, reminds me of balboa island near newport beach). i got some sorbet from famous ice cream shop berthillion...pqssion fruit and rqspberry orange...delicious!

i was then pretty tuckered out so i hopped on the metro home. i stopped into a grocery store to grab something to throw together for dinner. lucky for me, they had some bread some poilane, so i get to try it now anyway. i got some brie to go along with and am looking forward to enjoying it on my balcony.

ok the keyboard is driving me clinically insane...this email took almost an hour to type!!!! so im off. tomorrow is my day trip to verseilles and im really loking forward to it and will have more to report on then. i hope your bday card arrives on time!!!

love,

patty

An email to my mother...

Hi Mom!!

letting you know that i made it and i'm alive!!! my flight wasn't too horrific and i actually slept for a few hours. i was feeling pretty good when we first landed, then the taxi got caught in traffic and the ride last like an hour and i started getting pretty sleepy. i got to my hotel with plans to take a quick shower, freshen  up and hit the town but they don't do check in til 3, so i had to leave my bags and hit the town as i was....jet lagged and hideous looking. luckily i'd changed out of my loungewear and into normal clothes at the airport.

i set off kind of wandering for awhile and stopped in a few adorable patisseries. finally i stopped and sat in a cafe to situate myself on a map and make a game plan since i had about 7 hours to fill (and stay awake) before i could go back to the hotel. i did a walking tour of monmarte from my paris book, starting with the sacre couer basilica. it's absolutely gorgeous and i somehow managed in my exhuasted daze to climb the 260 stairs to the top of the dome for an amazing city-scape view.

then i wandered through the little alleyways of monmarte and saw some houses where picasso and van gogh used to live. i also saw the last remaining vineyard in paris and the 2 last wooden windmills. then i walked down to the moulin rouge and stopped int he museum of erotic art....interesting to say the least.

I did end up getting a phone....so if anyone can/wants to call, I believe the number is dialed 011 33 24 99 91 83. If that doesn't work, let me know and i'll try to figure it out. I'm 9 hours ahead of  CA time.

Now I'm finally checked into the hotel and my room is teeny tiny but so cute with an adorable balcony (on the 5th floor) with an incredible view of the sacre couer. i love it!!!!!!!

I'll send another update soon!
